Arnaud de La Fortelle – Chuàngkàn Bālí

: Professor and Director of the Center for Robotics, Mines ParisTech PSL Research University; Arnaud de La Fortelle holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and engineer degrees from the French École Polytechnique and École des Ponts et Chaussées. He managed several French and European projects (Puvame, Prevent/Intersafe, REACT, COM2REACT, AutoNet 2030…) and has been coordinator of the European project GeoNet and of the French project AROS (awarded in 2011 the French prize for enhancing industry competitiveness).
He has been elected in 2009 to the Board of Governors of IEEE ITSS (Intelligent Transportation System Society). He is member of the Board of the French SIA (Automotive Engineers Society). He has been member of several program committees for conferences and is Program Co-Chair for IEEE Intelligent Vehicle Symposium 2017. Since 2015, he is president of the French ANR scientific evaluation committee for sustainable mobility and cities. He also served as expert for the European H2020 program.
Arnaud de La Fortelle first studied theoretical properties of probability distributions (large deviations) with application to queuing networks. Then, he investigated communications for cooperative systems and the architecture needed in distributed systems. While keeping some teaching and fundamental research in probability theory, his main topic of interest is now cooperative systems (communication, data distribution, control, mathematical certification) and their applications (e.g. Cybercars, collective taxis).
He chairs the international research chair Drive for All with sponsors Valeo, Safran and Peugeot and partners UC Berkeley, EPFL and Shanghai Jiao Tong University who are joining their efforts in autonomous driving research and experiments. He also coordinates a research chair on Urban Logistics with sponsors Renault, La Poste, POMONA, ADEME and the city of Paris.

Yes, autonomous cars will radically change our environment

Some automakers such as Renault and PSA are announcing the marketing of autonomous cars with a level 4 of driving automation (the penultimate stage, according to a classification established by SAE International) for 2020 – literally the day after tomorrow. This may be too optimistic in view of the progress that still needs to be made, particularly in terms of driving contextualization. But there is little doubt that in the near future, the autonomous car will be generalized, with a major impact on the entire automotive value chain and our environment.
