He studied and got his Ph.D. in Economics at University of Paris 1. Gilbert Cette has done empirical investigations, focusing on growth, productivity, innovations, labor economics and structural reforms.
He has been a member of the Economic Analysis Council and the Minimum Wage Expert Group. He has chaired the AFSE (French Association of Economic Science) in 2012-2013. He co-chairs the Séminaire Emploi and chairs the Minimum Wage Expert Group. He is a member of the Editorial Board of : The Review of Income and Wealth, International Productivity Monitor, Economie et Statistique, Telos and Futuribles.
He has published in the American Economic Review, the Journal of the European Economic Association, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the European Economic Review, the Review of Income and Wealth, Economics Letters, among others. He has also published several books, the last ones being on labour market structural reforms.
